This week the Library launched its own Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bishopglibrary and as a result has decided to discontinue updating this blog. All library news will from today be posted on our Facebook site instead, although we’ll continue to use twitter and Blackboard to keep you informed about library news as well.

If you don’t have a Facebook account don’t worry! – you don’t need one to view the page. If you already use Facebook why not become a ‘fan’ of our page to receive updates from our page in your newsfeed?

New bibliography published

To add to our growing collection of bibliographies of children’s books we’ve this week published a new entitled ’Picture Books for Older Readers’. All the books featured can be found in our Library. Easter opening hours

The current term ends on Friday 8th April and begins again on Tuesday 3rd May. In between those dates the library will be closed over the weekend of the 16th and 17th April, over the long Easter weekend of Friday 22nd to Monday 25th April, and on the two Bank Holidays, Friday 29th April and Monday 2nd May. For the remainder of the time the Library will open from 11am to 6pm on weekends and 9am to 5pm on weekdays. Road closures around BG on Sunday 3rd April

A heads-up that the roads around BG will be closed for some of Sunday 3rd April because of the Lincoln 10k Road Race which passes by the University College (twice!). The University College’s resident students have been informed by the Council that the road closures will last from 9.15am to 11.30am, meaning that vehicular access to the campus should be resumed by the afternoon.

…what’s going on with the tree outside the Library entrance. It’s a hornbeam tree and is having its roots trimmed this week in preparation for its relocation later in the year as part of the library extension build. Trimming the roots in advance makes the move easier and is better for the tree. It won’t be moved far – only a few metres further north - but because it’s a memorial tree we want to make sure it’s properly protected from the effects of the build.

Delayed opening on 16th March

On Wednesday 16th March the Library will open at 10am instead of 8am to allow a staff meeting to take place. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Having problems logging into your library account?

A small number of people have reported problems logging into their library account via the Library Catalogue. We are finding that this is mainly affecting Internet Explorer 8 users. If you use IE8 and encounter this problem please try the following:

Open up the internet and go to Tools and then Internet Options.
Under Browsing History click on Delete.
Tick the top four boxes (Preserve Favourites, Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History) and then click on Delete.
Try logging back into your library account. If this still doesn’t work close and re-open Internet Explorer and try again.

No luck? If this doesn’t work remember that you can always phone us on 01522 583790 to renew your books or to check what you have on loan.

Celebrating World Book Day

Yesterday was World Book Day. We celebrated in style here at BG with a lunchtime storytelling event for the Reception class from Our Lady of Lincoln Catholic Primary School. Thirty children visited the campus, all in fancy dress (a wonderful sight!), and were read stories by the Principal Muriel Robinson, the Chair of Governors Max Manin, and Students’ Union Vice-President Voice Elizabeth Clarvis, rounding off with a shadow puppet show of the story of the Three Little Pigs by Maintenance Assistant Chris Foster. Several guests and local dignatories were in attendance including The Mayor and Mayoress of Lincoln, and the City Sheriff and Sheriff’s Lady. Also on display were lots of children’s books from the library collection, and the plans for the library extension.

An enjoyable time was had by all, rounding off with the announcement that each child would receive a book to take home with them. The delight on their faces and the shouting and whooping that ensued was an absolute pleasure to behold!

New ‘Hullabaloo!’ published

The spring issue of our children’s literature newsletter Hullabaloo! has just been published. It features articles about World Book Day, the launch of BG’s new Transitions Reading Resource, Richard & Judy’s new book club for children, the Save Our Libraries campaign, and two reviews by the owner of the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre, Marilyn Brocklehurst. We also bid a fond farewell to Dick King-Smith, and find out what the new Deputy Principal’s favourite book was when she was a nipper.

Birthday book quiz winner

As part of our 125th birthday celebrations a couple of weeks ago we ran a little book quiz. Several of you correctly answered all 15 questions, including 3rd year Education Studies and History student Abigail Pick, whose entry was randomly picked as the winner. Abigail receives £10 of print credit and copies of the books 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die and 1001 Children’s Book You Must Read Before You Die.
